My Paleo Eating Journal

I’m a 43 year old female, mother of two. I keep two main blogs:

  • RuralAspirations documents life on our small acreage from the perspective of a city girl raised in the ‘burbs.
  • FreeLearning documents our life as unschoolers.
This blog is a journal to document my progress on a Paleo-style diet. While I’ve been eating healthy, whole foods for at least three years now, I have decided to give up sugars, grains, and starchy carbs such as potatoes. I’ve done this for two main reasons: 1) I’m trying to shed those annoying 10 – 15 lbs that have crept up on me over the years and, 2) I’m trying to cure my sugar addiction and stop the cravings for sweets that plague me, especially after meals.

I’ve chosen this diet based on my own research. The logic behind it makes sense to me, and I’m impressed with the evidence that supports it. Most importantly, it fits with the eating habits that I believe have put me where I am today – packing a few extra pounds and constantly battling sugar highs and lows. I’m not religious about this diet. I don’t think it is the Only Truth, or that anybody not on this diet is Ignorant. I believe that different people come to poor health or excess weight for different reasons, so I’m open to the idea that what may work for some will not work for others. I’m not here to solve the world’s weight problems, I’m here to do something for me based on what I know about myself. If I can inspire or motivate someone else along the way, that would be a nice bonus.

The Basics

My way of eating is based on a Paleo/Primal diet and is comprised mainly of saturated animal fat (grass-fed meat, pastured eggs, butter), nuts and seeds (almonds, pecans, macadamia nuts, coconut, pumpkin seeds) and their oils (coconut oil, avocado oil) and lots of vegetables and fruit. I eat virtually no sugar (other than that contained naturally in fruit), potatoes or sweet potatoes, beans or legumes, and no grains or grain products.
